Stop Facebook Auto-Login even when “Remember me” is not checked!

  • Troubleshooting
  • Automatic, Desktop Uploader, Facebook, Gmail, Google, Logging In, Login, Picasa

Back in 2009 Facebook teamed up with OpenID to allow users to associate their accounts with a Google/GMail account. A feature of which was if you had already logged in to Google, when you visit Facebook, you’d be automatically logged in after a few moments.

This has a couple knock on effects, as experienced by myself on the “house” computer, where my Google account is left logged in. Picasa, Google’s photo management software has a few add-ons (Like Desktop Uploader) to allow people to upload their photos to Facebook.

If someone is logged in on a Facebook-linked Google account, and a different person wants to upload their photos, no matter how much you log out of Facebook via your default browser, the Google-linked Facebook account will log that user in during the uploading process.

In my vain attempts to get past it I ensured I didn’t have “Remember me” ticked, and yet despite this, I was logged in on the Facebook Uploader for Picasa. I then cleared the cookies, and while that worked first go, the problem would eventually return – unbeknownst to me, it was because I would later log in to Google.

Ultimately, it was because I linked my account and forgot about it.

So, to fix it, you can simply detach your openID Google Account from your Facebook account. To do this:

1. Go to Facebook (Desktop Version)
2. Click the Arrow at the Top right
3. Click “Account Settings”
4. Look for “Linked Accounts” and click “Edit”
5. Next to “Google” click “Remove”

And you’re done!
