Pulse Pharmacy Replies re: Eken PowerBands

In reply to a recent E-Mail, Pulse Pharmacy (Australia) got back to me the other day with the following:

Hi Bayani

We are very aware of the bad press surrounding the Powerbalance bands and have certainly been monitoring the situation closely. We have a close relationship with Eken powerbands and are aware they have also been monitored closely by the ACCC but have been assured that their product is not breaching any standards. They have also met all TGA requirements.

We appreciate your feedback and we will continue to monitor this category closely.

Pulse Pharmacy, in addition to selling EKEN PowerBands within their stores, sells these Bands via their website. (http://www.pulsepharmacy.com.au/Product/Eken-Powerband-Blue–and–White-Extra-Small.aspx)

The 4 nFIT holograms result in a higher potency product which the wearer can instantly recognise.
•    Strength
•    Balance
•    Flexibility
•    Endurance
Wearers have reported increased core strength, balance, flexibility and endurance. See Testimonials for some great reports!

EKEN’s website (http://www.ekenpowerbands.com.au/specials/) quotes similar “hologram technology” to the recently reprimanded PowerBalance, stating:

nFIT (nano Frequency Infusion Technology) is our proprietary system for programming the EKEN holograms. This method ensures that each hologram receives a highly concentrated dose of the frequencies required to produce the highest quality power band on the market.

Personally, I’m really disappointed in the reply from Pulse Pharmacy; it’s a laissez-faire response to a situation where Pulse Pharmacy should be active in ensuring their products supply their consumers with effective treatments; and as a Senior Buyer – this is where I think their focus should be.

Pulse Pharmacy is seemingly more like a retail outlet with a licence to prescribe evidence-based medicines. I’m not even sure if their spin on “bad press” regarding PowerBalance is out of arrogance or ignorance.

Pulse Pharmacy stated that because they’ve been “assured” Ekan are not breaking ACCC standards, this makes it ethically OK to do so. Pulse Pharmacy noted that Eken met all the TGA requirements, which doesn’t say much at all. Listed Products aren’t required to provide evidence; just state that they have some in their possession.

PowerBalance made the same claim too, until the TGA withdrew representation after investigating due to complaints. (http://www.tgacrp.com.au/index.cfm?pageID=13&special=complaint_single&complaintID=1650)

I guess I’ll have to write up a response. In the mean time, I encourage you to do the same thing too!

Update: In response to a recent comment, I will include this link to another page that describes the EKEN Powerband Scam.

To Brian Wilshire Re: Wakefield and the MMR Vaccine

Hi Brian,

Further to last night about MMR and Wakefield, this was featured last night on ABC:

In the Wikipedia Article about Dr. Andrew Wakefield:

I bring attention to one of the final paragraphs:

“Wakefield claims that Deer is a “hit man who was brought in to take [him] down” and that other scientists have simply taken Deer at his word. While on Anderson Cooper 360°, claiming he hadn’t read the BMJ articles yet, he denied their validity and denied that Deer had interviewed the families of the children in the study. He also urged viewers to read his book, Callous Disregard, which he claimed would explain why he was being targeted, to which Anderson Cooper replied: “But, sir, if you’re lying, then your book is also a lie. If your study is a lie, your book is a lie.”[84]

Deer responded to Wakefield’s charge that he was a “hit man” by challenging Wakefield to sue him for libel:

“If it is true that Andrew Wakefield is not guilty as charged, he has the remedy of bringing a libel action against myself, the Sunday Times of London, against the medical journal here, and he would be the richest man in America.”[85]

He also noted that Wakefield has previously sued him and lost.[53][85]

The biggest problem with the claim that MMR is a cause of Autism is that there is no evidence of such, and – as Dr. Rachie pointed out, 13 years of investigation hasn’t found it.

That’s 13 years of research WASTED.

The Lancet would have published the paper due to the implications of the claimed findings by Wakefield; after being discredited as a poor example of ethical research, the Lancet retracted the paper – and rightly so.

Regardless of Wakefield’s financial findings, his paper was wrong because it was intentionally flawed. It wasn’t wrong because of a conspiracy, not because of politics, not because of his personal motives or intended incentives, but because repeated attempts by researchers worldwide show time after time that his research was both ethically immoral and methodically erroneous.

Thanks for the extra time given on the radio with my alternate view [from your programs] 🙂

NSW Government supporting “integrated” Medicine

Today’s Post was going to be about Aspartame, but not any more.

I am so cheesed off this morning.

I checked Twitter to find that Meryl-Fucking-Dorey’s Australian Vaccination Network (Yes, the same Science-Denying, Bullshit artists that brought the misinformation about the MMR Vaccines to Australia) CONGRATULATE the NSW Government on its decision to fund a Chinese Medical Clinic.

“Kudos to the NSW government. It’s a start. http://fb.me/QVtefyuY” – Australian (Anti) Vaccination Network

Government funds Sydney Chinese medicine centre

You can view the story stub here: http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/01/18/3115581.htm

Essentially, the Chinese and NSW Government have partnered to create a $75-million dollar Medical Centre, where “Willoughby Council mayor Pat Reilly says visiting Chinese doctors will work with local researchers to provide treatment integrating the two traditions.”

Perhaps Mayor Pat Reilly doesn’t understand what medicine is – there should only ever be evidence-based medicine.
If the medical practices they use are supported by evidence, awesome. Bring it on and use it.

The clinic proposed may be educating Chinese Medical Practitioners, and that’s a good thing, but given that the Chinese Government has embarked on overhauling their National Health System, perhaps less of the apologist direction of “integration” should be taken; rather it should consist of the uptake of modern medicine being taught throughout their own health system.

Any positive clinical findings of effectiveness and possible incorporation into the Medical field can always be done through Research, Trials, Replication, Reviews, and Testing.

That’s why evidence-based medicine work and bullshit doesn’t.

You don’t make good medicines by making an Integrated Health Clinic and drizzling some herbal tea over it to improve its “Jing”

The Bullshit Health Foods

Now, you may think I’m being a little hasty about this.
After all, if it works, it’s OK, right? Sure! If it works – but it doesn’t.

Here are some of the products they sell (http://www.healthpac.com.au/en/health_foods.asp):

Ten Flavour Great Tonic Pills $8.90

This products assists conditions related to the deficiency of both vital energy (Qi) and blood, marked by pale looks, tiredness, shortness of breath, palpitation, dizziness, sweating, cold extremities or excessive menstruation.

Not withstanding the fact there is no evidence of a “vital energy” – and the word “energy” is used erroneously, the product is a “cure-all” type of snake-oil – or tablet which I am sure has no credible, well-controlled, clinical evidence that supports its efficacy beyond that of placebo – Which at the end of the day means it is NOT effective.

Six Flavour Tonic $12.90

Beijing TongRen Tang’s Six Flavour Tonic Pills nourishes and enriches Liver and Kidney yin. It can relieve symptoms including weakness and soreness of the lower back and knees, dizziness, tinnitus, dry mouth, night sweats, seminal emission, and general weakness due to the deficiency of Liver and Kidney yin.

And here’s another, trying to sell the concept that the Liver and Kidney have a magical, all-powerful “yin” that can cured with a nondescript tonic.

And this one, I think is especially heinous.

Five Seeds Eugenic Supporter $15.90

Five Seeds Eugenic Supporter not only enhances fertility, but improves sperm count by replenishing the Kidney and strengthening ‘Jing’, which in traditional Chinese medical thought is the essence of life, and is one of the basic materials for the formation of the human body. This product can be used for (1) Impotence, premature ejaculation and emission, (2) Lower back pain, dribbling urination (3) Male infertility (4) Female infertility (5) Repeated miscarriage (6) reoccurring mouth ulcers.

Repeated Miscarriage?! Do they have credible clinical trials supporting this? Again, a shotgun load of symptoms with a “cure-all” remedy brought to you by a mythical, unsubstantiated claim of “Jing”.

So, what else does this Medical Clinic do?

Colonic Hydrotherapy

Absurdly enough the NSW Government is quite happy to also assist in the funding of Colonic Hydrotherapy.

What’s that, you ask? Here’s a quick video that walks you through the nitty-gritty.

A red flag goes up when someone tells me they can cure my Acne by sticking water up my arsehole and running water around in my colon; but that doesn’t stop them from making the claims – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4wA-LfeNsw

Whoever the woman is, I couldn’t be stuffed playing it again, says that it a RECOMMENDED way to fix skin problems. Oddly I’m not aware of too many Doctors recommending this, nor have I heard anyone mention this. Did they miss the Memo?

I especially love when she awkwardly tells you that you will..  “release a lot more emotionally” .. “Built up emotional toxins”..”by massaging your abdomen”…. Ouch!

And.. then she goes on to make the colon a Homunculus, stating that there are points in our colon that represents parts of our body. With things like acupuncture, palmistry, reflexology, it’s any wonder the body can keep up with all these “pressure points”!

Anyway, for some sensible information, go see Dr. David Gorski’s article “Colon Cleanses”: A Load of You Know What…

Colon “cleanses”: A load of you know what…

Oh! Something good!

About the only thing that made me think “At least there’s that!” was the WorkCover section that recommended vaccination.

An Open Letter to Pulse Pharmacy

To Pulse Pharmacy,

While in one of your stores, specifically the Brookvale store at Warringah Mall, I noticed a display featuring the EKAN Power Band on your Service Desk.

Perhaps it has slipped by you, but recently the ACCC ordered PowerBalance, a Brand name offering the same “technology” as EKAN, to cease selling their product in Australia after Power Balance admitted that it has engaged in misleading and deceptive conduct in breach of s. 52 of the Trade Practices Act 1974. – http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/964065

ACCC Chairman Graeme Samuel went on to warn consumers of  “***SIMILAR*** products on the market that make unsubstantiated claims, when they may be no more beneficial than a rubber band,” You can hear the comments made by the ACCC Chairman at http://bit.ly/hitQLR

EKAN states clearly on their website regarding their hologram “technology”:
“Each (EKAN) Power band is made of high-grade silicone and embedded with 4 nFIT holograms.”

Holograms? Yes, holograms. EKAN claim they give their Holograms a:
“highly concentrated dose of frequencies” —

Not withstanding the fact EKAN have misused the term “frequencies”, EKAN provide no scientific evidence to support its claims – At all. The public expects, and deserves it’s pharmacies to provide only science-based medicine. Placebo is not an alternative to actual efficacious, medical treatment; and Pulse Pharmacy shouldn’t be in the business of knowingly misleading it’s customers.

To also sell it straight from your website is disgusting and immoral.

I hope you will reconsider your decision to sell this sham product, having now been informed of this, to do nothing would be making Pulse Pharmacy complicit in the scamming of your customers.

Court Ordered Vaccination & SMH False Balance

Ordered to have VaccineRecently (January 15, 2011) printed  in the Sun Herald was the article on the left; the article was about a 5-year-old girl who was ordered to be vaccination after the mother refused to do so – citing evidence that was criticised  by the Judge as “outlandish statements unsupported by any empirical evidence”.

Now, what I’m focusing on here is how the journalist, Holly Ife, decided to present an issue as being balanced in opposing viewpoints, which isn’t what the evidence actually supports.

Was she trying to AVOID bias, or was she trying to SENSATIONALISE the article?

Leading one of the final paragraphs with a contentious “However,” and following it up with a quote from a paediatric chiropractor; namely Dr. Warren Sipser, gives the impression that this bloke has some knowledge or authority on the matter and should be given credence.

He doesn’t, and shouldn’t.

He is a quack, and a dangerous quack at that.

Two Opposing Viewpoints

Sipser is quoted in the article as saying that it’s “dangerous to impose [immunisation] on anyone when there are two opposing viewpoints” – he even went on to say “there is credible evidence they may do more harm than good”.

First off, there is always someone in opposition to a viewpoint. Even today there are people so delusional that they believe the earth is flat; and even today, there are people who believe in magical hand-waving, spine cracking “healing”. To say because there are opposing viewpoints that we shouldn’t do anything is ridiculous. While people may have opposing viewpoints the EVIDENCE doesn’t. The OVERALL EVIDENCE empirically demonstrates that immunisation IS a good thing, and is NOT doing more harm than good.

What Sipser calls credible are articles that come to the conclusions that best align with his beliefs.

Where as I, I call things credible when researchers use excellent scientific methodology that controls against bias through double & triple blind trials, where those results are not just replicated by a number of other independent researchers, but the research is critically examined for faults by a number of peers and finally published in a journal with integrity.

Silly Things in the Bible

It’s been amusing to come across the various things that crop up in the bible, and in an effort to keep a place for my favourites, I’ll post them in this post. They were all found on the Internets; but hey – Easily verified by a Bible! I’ve kept some of the explanations from the original posts’ author, editing some, etc.

This is the Talking Donkey Story:

Numbers 22:21-29 (New King James Version)
Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey and went with the princes of Moab. But God was very angry when he went, and the angel of the LORD stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, she turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat her to get her back on the road.

Then the angel of the LORD stood in a narrow path between two vineyards, with walls on both sides. When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she pressed close to the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat her again.

Then the angel of the LORD moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn, either to the right or to the left. When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she lay down under Balaam, and he was angry and beat her with his staff. Then the LORD opened the donkey’s mouth, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?” Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.”

God Deals with whiners:

Numbers 11:18- (New Living Translation)
“And tell the people to purify themselves, for tomorrow they will have meat to eat. Tell them, ‘The LORD has heard your whining and complaints: “If only we had meat to eat! Surely we were better off in Egypt!” Now the LORD will give you meat, and you will have to eat it. And it won’t be for just a day or two, or for five or ten or even twenty. You will eat it for a whole month until you gag and are sick of it. For you have rejected the LORD, who is here among you, and you have complained to him, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”

One time, Jesus was asked to leave town– for killing all the pigs!

Matthew 8:28-34 (New International Version)
When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. “What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”

Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.” He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water.

Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.

Bad drivers 2000 years ago!

2 Kings 9:20 (New International Version)
The lookout reported, “He has reached them, but he isn’t coming back either. The driving is like that of Jehu son of Nimshi–he drives like a madman.”

There’s the story of Isaac’s son, who smelled like a farm – Bad BO or what?!

Genesis 27:27 (New International Version)
So he went to him and kissed him. When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes, he blessed him and said, “Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the LORD has blessed.

2 Kings 2:23-24 (New International Version)
From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road some youths came out of the town and jeered at him. “Go on up, you baldhead!” they said. “Go on up, you baldhead!”
He turned around, and looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the Lord.
Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths.

Judges 7:4-8 (New International Version)
But the LORD said to Gideon, “There are still too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will sift them for you there. If I say, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go; but if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.”

So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the LORD told him, “Separate those who lap the water with their tongues like a dog from those who kneel down to drink.” Three hundred men lapped with their hands to their mouths. All the rest got down on their knees to drink.

The LORD said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the other men go, each to his own place.” So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites to their tents but kept the three hundred, who took over the provisions and trumpets of the others.

Exodus 35:1-3 (New International Version)
Moses assembled the whole Israelite community and said to them, “These are the things the LORD has commanded you to do: For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death. Do not light a fire in any of your dwellings on the Sabbath day.”

Judges 16:17 (New International Version)
So he told her everything. “No razor has ever been used on my head,” he said, “because I have been a Nazirite set apart to God since birth. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man.”

2 Samuel 6:1-14 (New International Version)
David again brought together out of Israel chosen men, thirty thousand in all. He and all his men set out from Baalah of Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name, the name of the LORD Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim that are on the ark.

They set the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart with the ark of God on it, and Ahio was walking in front of it. David and the whole house of Israel were celebrating with all their might before the LORD, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, sistrums and cymbals.

When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. The LORD’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down and he died there beside the ark of God.

Then David was angry because the LORD’s wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.

David was afraid of the LORD that day and said, “How can the ark of the LORD ever come to me?” He was not willing to take the ark of the LORD to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it aside to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. The ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and the LORD blessed him and his entire household.

Now King David was told, “The LORD has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and everything he has, because of the ark of God.” So David went down and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing.

When those who were carrying the ark of the LORD had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. David, wearing a linen ephod, danced before the LORD with all his might, while he and the entire house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouts and the sound of trumpets.

As the ark of the LORD was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, she despised him in her heart. They brought the ark of the LORD and set it in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and David sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before the LORD. After he had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD Almighty.

Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to each person in the whole crowd of Israelites, both men and women. And all the people went to their homes.

When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, “How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, disrobing in the sight of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!”

David said to Michal, “It was before the LORD, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the LORD’s people Israel-I will celebrate before the LORD. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.” And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.

Jesus :  “But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.”
Luke 19:27

“And the Lord was with Judah; and He drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but He could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.”
Judges 1:19

Mathew 2:19“Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men”

None of Herod’s contemporary historians recorded this, including Josephus, who chronicled Herod’s life in full. Why wouldn’t anyone notice the death of every child in and around a major city like Bethlehem.

2 Samuel 24:9 “And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.”

Thats 1,300,000 fighting men. That doesn’t include a population count of women or childern either. Thats a rediculously high number of troops for two tribal armies in 1000 BC. The biggest millitary in the ancient world (Persia) only sent 250,000 on their first attempt to invade Athens and the rest of Greece, and that was a few hundred years later. In 2000 the US had about 1.37 million active duty troops.

Exodus 33:20-23“And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live. And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock: and it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a cleft of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by: and I will take away mine hand, and thou shall see my back parts; but my face shall not be seen.”

Genesis 38:8-10 NASB Then Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform your duty as a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.” Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so when he went in to his brother’s wife, he wasted his seed on the ground in order not to give offspring to his brother. But what he did was displeasing in the sight of the LORD; so He took his life also.

1 Samuel 18:25-27 ESV Then Saul said, “Thus shall you say to David, ‘The king desires no bride-price except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, that he may be avenged of the king’s enemies.’” Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son-in-law. Before the time had expired, David arose and went, along with his men, and killed two hundred of the Philistines. And David brought their foreskins, which were given in full number to the king, that he might become the king’s son-in-law. And Saul gave him his daughter Michal for a wife.

Deuteronomy 25:11-12 NASB If two men, a man and his countryman, are struggling together, and the wife of one comes near to deliver her husband from the hand of the one who is striking him, and puts out her hand and seizes his genitals, then you shall cut off her hand; you shall not show pity.

I Samuel 6:4-5 “They asked, “What is the indemnity that we should pay to Him?” They answered, “Five golden hemorrhoids and five golden mice, corresponding to the number of lords of the Philistines; for the same plague struck all of you and your lords. You shall make figures of your hemorrhoids and of the mice that are ravaging your land; thus you shall honor the God of Israel, and perhaps He will lighten the weight of His hand upon you and your gods and your land.”
